1999 AMP Inc. CHALLENGE #2

Information Technology Workforce Shortage: One of the most significant paradigm shifts has occurred in the history of computing. Almost instantly, the world has entered the Age of Computing, and skilled workers to support this new technology in the workplace are scarce. How can industry enlarge the necessary IT resources to support the expanded technology demand, but most importantly, how can AMP position itself as an IT employer of choice.

Background Information:

There simply are not enough IT professionals to go around. According to the US Bureau of Labor & Statistics, the number of unfilled IT jobs exceeds 200,000. It is a classic case of supply and demand. Some key facts of the situation:

IT jobs in the US will grow by 137,000 annually.

BS Degrees in Computer Science from 1986 to 1995 have dropped 42%.

Average turnover rate in IT is 14.5% / year. This is high compared to other professions.

Foreign computer professionals entering the US increased 450%.

The Information Technology Association of America (ITAA) in Berkley, CA, highlighted other contributing factors to the IT workforce shortage. First is an image problem. Usually the term 'computer geek' is associated with computer professionals. Secondly, the rigorous technical requirements of Computer Science degrees was viewed as a deterrent. Third is highlighted by an education problem, not just in Comp Science curriculums, but also in the awareness of parents, teachers and career counselors on the potential and rewards of an IT career.
